The Substack
Now in 2023 we’ve been slightly changing this Substack to be a mix of periodically sending out Newsletters to everyone, and publishing more essays directly here on the website. The topics will be as before, the blending of the old and the new, but at times with more thoughts about the current changing times. 2022 and 2023 seems to have been a threshold in World History, and the end of an era of Western Hegemony on the planet. Now we seem to enter not a “multipolar world”, but an overall picture with two competing Global Systems. The Chinese Global World, and the Western Global World. And one is rapidly succeeding, while the other one is dramatically failing.
This shift has also tremendous implications for the dynamics of geopolitics, and life in our Western countries. The hypothesis on this Substack is that in order to be able to compete and thrive, we need a new Rebirth of the Western Civilization, based on Timeless Truths and Wisdom, and an aspiration for Joy, Beauty and Humility under the Heavens.

About Richard Emerson
Richard Emerson is an Independent Researcher of the Divine Comedy and Medieval Cosmology with undergraduate studies in Art History, Literature History and the Italian Language from 2008, and an ongoing Master’s Degree in Classics at Memoria College with a focus on Ancient and Medieval Philosophy and Theology. His passion and interest for Dante Alighieri comes primarily from a deep personal love of the Divine Comedy, many years of travels and studies in Italy, and from living in Florence for two years in 2013-2014.
He has also studied Italian Language at the Scuola Babilonia in Sicily and the Lorenzo di Medici Academia in Florence, and recently completed a course on “Dante e Scienza” at the University of Naples Federico II.

A Great Short Story About the Joy of Discovery

This is a beautiful short read about the beginning of a journey, how immersing yourself in a great book can open up a whole new world of meaning for you. The central themes of this book focus on being present and mindful, and reflecting on how you fit into the bigger picture of life and history. I found myself feeling envious of the central character’s contentment with the simplicity of life and his awareness of the joy of simply being part of it.
